President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday congratulated India-born scientist Professor Venkatraman Ramakrishnana for jointly winning this year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

In her message, Patil said she was very proud to hear of the news and was happy that Professor Ramakrishnan's pursuit of understanding the structure and functioning of the ribosome has been recognised.

Patil hoped that the work will one day help in bringing a cure for those who suffer from incurable bacterial infections, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said. Ramakrishnan, now a United States citizen, is the 13th Nobel Prize winner to have conducted path-breaking research at the Cambridge-based MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

He shares the 2009 Nobel prize for Chemistry with Thomas E Steitz and Ada E Yonath for their work in the study of the structure and function of the ribosome.

Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi also congratulated Ramakrishnan for winning the Nobel Prize. "The people of India are proud by his unprecedented achievement and the Indian Diaspora all over the world is also overwhelmed by his accomplishment," Ravi said in his message.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi also extended warm greetings to Ramakrishnan for winning the prestigious Chemistry Nobel Prize.

In her message, Gandhi said Ramakrishnana has made the entire country proud with his pioneering work, which has won him the most coveted recognition.
