November 23, 2009 16:55 IST

Suspected Maoists shot dead a local Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader in Jhargram area of West Midnapore district on Monday, the police said.

Tapan Mahto, a Salbani branch committee member, was called out from his Sirshi village home by some people on Sunday night and was taken to an isolated place and gunned down.

His body was found Monday morning at Boria near Jhargram, sources said, adding he was shot in the head thrice from a close range. Some Maoists posters found beside the body claimed that he was killed because he was a police informer.
