Another farmer allegedly committed suicide in Orissa's Sundargarh district due to crop failure and debt burden, the police said on Sunday.

Francis Kujur (35) of Balimunda village under the Hatibari police limits allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree on the outskirt of his village on Saturday.

His body was spotted by his wife and other villagers.

The police sent the body for postmortem, they said.

Kujur's wife alleged that her husband took the extreme step as he was unable to repay a loan of Rs 50,000 he had taken from a bank for agriculture purposes.

The district administration has asked Biramitrapur Tahasildar B N Nayak and Sub-divisioal Police Officer S K Dutta and other officials to go to the village and investigate the matter.

A few days ago, another farmer Mahar Sai from Rangeidhipa village committed suicide by consuming poison due to crop loss.

With this, the number of small and marginal farmers who committed suicide in Orissa due to alleged crop loss and debt burden this year rose to at least 17, sources said.
