A case has been lodged against cricketer-turned politician Mohammed Azharuddin and Union Minister RPN Singh in Kushinagar district for alleged violation of the election model code of conduct, a senior official said.
"A case was lodged against Azhar and Singh in Kushinagar for holding public meeting yesterday in violation of the model code of conduct without taking permission of the district administration," a senior Home department official said.
Congress MP from Moradabad Azharuddin and Union Minister for Road Transport Singh were there to campaign for party candidate from Padrauna Assembly seat, Mohini Devi, who is also Singh's mother.
"The case had been registered under section 188 of the IPC," he said.
Police said that the two leaders not only addressed a public meeting, but also played cricket.
By-election for Padrauna Assembly seat was necessitated due to resignation of Singh, after he was elected to the Lok Sabha.
Mohini Devi is pitched against senior BSP leader and former cabinet minister Swami Prasad Maurya.
