Major heist at Mumbai airport, 1 injured

In a daring broad daylight robbery, three car-borne armed men stormed into the Air India cargo terminal at the airport here and decamped with 100 kg of gold and silver coins, police said.

Two persons, including the clerk of a company which booked the cargo of gold and silver coins, were injured during the incident. The other person was security personnel, D S Bhosale, who suffered a skull fracture while attempting to prevent the fleeing robbers.

Bhosale has been admitted to a local hospital and is currently in the ICU, the police said.

A case has been registered into the matter, they said adding that no arrests have been made so far.

"Pidilite Industry had placed an order eight days ago with the National Refinery, a gold refinery unit, for Rs 55 lakh worth of gold and silver coins, which was being sent to the company's office in Hyderabad today," a senior police officer from Airport Police Station said.

The robbers struck when three employees of the refinery unit were screening the consignment weighing 145 kg, the police said.
