Swine flu cases go up to 113 in India

Nine persons on Tuesday tested positive for swine flu, taking the total cases of H1N1 infection in India to 113 as the World Health Organisation reported 70,893 confirmed cases globally.

Fresh cases were reported from Chennai (4), Bengaluru (2), Mumbai (2) and Delhi (1).

In Chennai, four members of a family who arrived here from Australia last week, tested positive for swine flu.

Health Department officials said the persons, including three males aged 38, eight and six years respectively and a three-year-old girl, tested positive. The two cases in Bengaluru are that of a 38-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter. Both had travelled from United States to Bengaluru on June 25.

In New Delhi, a 55 year-old man, who had travelled from Sydney to the national capital on June 26, reported at the health facility with symptoms of fever with sore throat on Monday. He tested positive for swine flu, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in a statement.

The cases reported from Mumbai are that of a 30-year-old man who travelled from London transiting Doha on Sunday. He reported at the identified health facility with fever, dry cough and running nose. The other case is a 28-year-old man who travelled from Chile transiting Santiago and Johannesburg on Monday. He had fever and cough for four days and was detected at the airport.

 

Altogether 113 people have tested positive in the country. Of the 743 suspected cases, 211 were identified through entry screening, 27 through contact tracing while the rest were self reported.

Of the positive cases, 70 people have been discharged as the rest of them are undergoing treatment at identified health facilities. Altogether 311 deaths have been reported due to swine flu globally, the statement said.

The government is conducting health screening of passengers coming from affected countries at 22 international airports. A total of 48,718 passengers have been screened on Monday of which 32,972 passengers were from affected countries.

As many as 224 doctors and 112 paramedics are manning 77 counters at these airports. A cumulative total of 26,33,121 passengers have been screened so far. The condition of a woman, who was tested positive for swine flu and has been undergoing treatment in the capital, was stated to be stable.
