Nearly 100 vital installations 'high risk' in Delhi

The list of high risk targets by Delhi Police Research Unit -- a dedicated wing for preparing security plans about city -- includes the Central Government Office complex, Delhi Government Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk Metro station and areas like Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, and Greater Kailash besides some schools and certain five-star hotels, sources said.

"A detailed security audit was recently carried out by district police personnel in coordination with DPRU and Special Cell to analyse threat and grade hotels, malls, multiplexes, schools, colleges and other commercial and government installations," they said.

Police has graded the installations on three broad category -- high risk, medium risk and low risk.

"Those that fall under maximum (high) risk have been asked to ensure enhanced security cover," the sources said adding "local police has also been asked to provide round the clock security arrangements to such buildings."

Sources said there are nearly 100 installations in the capital which have been identified as high risk targets whereas the number of medium and low risk buildings is nearly 350.

DPRU was set up eight months back with an objective to prepare a 'blue diary' (master plan) for Delhi's security by collecting and sharing intelligence along with other stake holders, including the Intelligence Bureau.

They said the direction to set up the DPRU had come from Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna during his visit to Delhi Police headquarters on September 14 last year.

Khanna had asked Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal to prepare a detailed report for the national capital on measures to counter terror strikes, they said.

"In the wake of November 26 Mumbai terror attacks and intelligence inputs about the capital being vulnerable to such strikes, the police department has expedited various measures to guard people and property in its vicinity," they said.

They also said the Centre has asked IB to chalk out a set of measures to be followed by private and government installations for security purposes.
