'Preliminary medical report suggests woman not raped'

Last updated on: June 23, 2009 14:52 IST

The Delhi police on Tuesday said that the preliminary medical examination report of a woman, who alleged that she was sexually assaulted by five policemen, suggested that she was not raped.

"We have received the preliminary medical examination report. It says that there is no injury mark on the body of the victim," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.

However, he said, the vaginal swab has been preserved and will be sent to the Forensic Laboratory in Rohini for further tests.

"We are still awaiting the final report as the reports from the forensic experts are needed to finalise the medical report," he said.

The woman claimed that she was raped by a Station House Officer and four other policemen in Inderpuri police station in south-west Delhi. The allegation sparked violent protests with a large crowd attacking and ransacking the building.

Police sources said the woman's husband was allegedly involved in a betting racket and police had questioned her to ascertain his whereabouts. "But she was not taken to police station," a senior police official said.

SHO Pradeep Kumar had taken charge of the station on May 24 only and he had "mounted pressure on criminal elements in the area," the official claimed and alleged that this could be the reason for the woman's allegations.

Though a case is yet to be registered, Delhi Police transferred the investigations to Crime Branch besides sending Inderpuri SHO Pradeep Kumar to Police Lines to ensure a "free and fair probe."

Ealier, a woman, who resides in a slum in Inderpuri, had alleged that she was taken to the Inderpuri station on Monday night by two policemen to enquire about her husband, who, the police said, was a "local criminal involved in betting."

"They took me to the lock-up, locked me inside and started hurling abuses at me besides thrashing me. Then they took me upstairs and raped me one by one. The SHO also raped me besides four other men in uniform. I can recognise them by face," the woman claimed before mediapersons.

She claimed that they let her off after threatening her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone.

The woman said she informed her husband who took her to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. The husband said hospital authorities asked him to inform police.
