June 19, 2009 01:44 IST
All India Mahila Congress president Prabha Thakur on Thursday said that the Congress will support the bill in Parliament on reservation for women in Central government jobs.

"We had demanded 33 per cent reservation in all the Central government jobs. We have spoken to Congress president Sonia Gandhi who has replied in positive," Prabha Thakur told media persons on Thursday.

Congress will back the demand and will soon place the bill on the floor of the Parliament to have the reservation which will financially empower women across the country, she said.

Thakur said that although Mahila Congress has stipulated 33 per cent, at least reservation to the tune of 22 per cent would get ahead with majority on the floor.

Such a step (reservation in government jobs) is very imperative that will give them financial freedom, she said.

The Congress leader said there would be no problem in passing the women's reservation bill.

Many political parties in the opposition are supporting the bill. "I don't think that there should be any problem," she said.
