Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been staying in a multi-storeyed apartment meant for parliamentarian in New Delhi, has decided to shift to a bungalow now.

Sources in the Urban Development Ministry said she has decided to move to a Type VIII bungalow, the biggest ones meant for cabinet ministers, located on Akbar Road.

However, she may have to wait for some time as present occupant Mani Shankar Aiyar who lost the election from Myladuthurai constituency in Tamil Nadu, has sought some time for vacating it.

Banerjee would continue to use her personal car and will not take the official vehicle.

While Mamata has been allotted Type VIII bungalow at 14 Akbar Road, Chemicals and Fertiliser Minister M K Azhagiri has been allotted the same type at Duplex Road, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Directorate of Estate has finalised the first list of bungalows to be given to the new ministers. "We have communicated to seven Cabinet ministers and 12 ministers of state about their new ministerial bungalows. We are in the process of finalising bungalows for other ministers soon," said a source.

While all Cabinet ministers are being allocated Type VIII bungalows, ministers of state are given Type VII accommodation in the VIP area of the city.

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has been allotted a Type-VIII bungalow vacated by former minister K Natwar Singh at 19 Teen Murti Lane.

Having lost the elections, some high-profile ministers in the UPA government's first term like Ram Vilas Paswan, Renuka Choudhury and Shankar Singh Vaghela are among those who have been asked to vacate their bungalows by June 22.

Former Minority Affairs Minister A R Antulay has agreed to vacate his Jantar Mantar bungalow, which has been now allocated to a new Cabinet Minister, the sources said.

The Directorate of Estate is showing urgency in dealing with the shortage of official accommodation in the capital since new ministers are already in office and several first-time MPs are looking for a home.

The Directorate has allotted 36 Aurangzeb Road bungalow to Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik, while Minister of State for Tourism Sultan Ahmed and Minister of State for External Affairs Minister Shashi Tharoor have been allotted 48 Lodi Estate and 97 Lodhi Estate respectively.

Former ministers like Kanti Singh, Raghunath Jha, M A A Fatmi and Akhilesh Prasad Singh who lost the elections, have also been asked by the directorate to vacate their sprawling bungalows.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha Housing Committee has received about 270 applications for houses from MPs of 15th Lok Sabha.

The Housing Committee has already served notices to about 300 former MPs to vacate their houses.
