The arrest of Sheetal Mafatlal, the president of Mafatlal Luxury, appears to be the result of a tip-off by some 'disgruntled' opponent of her husband Atulya, her lawyer alleged in Mumbai on Monday.
"Sheetal was arrested at the airport on Sunday when she was returning from London after the police and other authorities were tipped off by some disgruntled opponent of the Mafatlal family and industry," Satish Maneshinde said.
He further said that she had in her possession jewellery and other personal possessions worth approximately Rs 51 lakh.
"The jewellery was given to her by her father-in-law and they were used articles. According to a Supreme Court ruling, if the value of the gold is less than Rs one crore and the duty is less than Rs 30 lakh, then the offence is bailable," he said.
Sheetal had 51 items in her possession including bangles, chains and rings and the most valuable jewellery was worth Rs 2.5 lakh, Maneshinde said, adding he would file an application seeking bail for her.
She has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Customs Act.
