Maoists strike again, kill two near Lalgarh

July 14, 2009 19:39 IST
After being ousted by the security forces, Maoists struck again -- the second attack in the past seven days -- killing a supporter of People's Committee against Police Atrocities and a Trinamool Congress member on Tuesday morning.

PCPA supporter Tarini Deb Singh and Trinamool activist Swapan Deb Singh, both hailing from Memul village, were abducted two days ago by suspected Maoists, who accused them of working as informers for police and the Communist Party of India-Marxist, the police said.

Their bodies were found near Lalgarh in Salboni between Memul village and Madhupur village, the police said, adding that the Maoists have claimed responsibility for the murders.

Police said nearly 10 armed Maoists raided the house of Sudarshan Das, a local-level CPI-M leader, in the Salboni police station area, beat his father Rakhhari Das for refusing to part with information about his son and abducted the duo.

"We have been constantly threatened by them (Maoists). We have informed the police many times, but nothing has happened and now they have killed my husband. I don't know where to go with my son and daughter," Tarini's wife Anima told PTI over phone.

Earlier, the Maoists abducted two CPI-M supporters and left their bodies in front of the party office. Then in a brazen show of strength, the armed Maoists took out a procession, ransacked the CPI-M office and set it on fire.
