'Behave yourself, maintain discipline, decorum inside the House.' This was the message Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar had for as many as 302 first-time members of the Lok Sabha.

"I would request you all to ensure that undignified behaviour inside the House is avoided at all costs so that people's faith in the working of our political institutions can be restored and parliamentary business transacted with utmost efficiency," she said.

Kumar was speaking at an orientation programme for the newly-elected members of the 15th Lok Sabha.

She noted that there have been several instances of unruly behaviour on the part of some members in the House with scant regard for the dignity of the highest parliamentary institution of the country.

The five-day orientation programme will cover issues like Parliamentary Questions and procedural devices available to members to raise issues on the floor of the House, Parliamentary Committees, Parliamentary Privileges, budgetary process, and the role, status and functions of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

Veteran parliamentarians including Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, former Union Ministers Shivraj Patil and Oscar Fernandes will also address the new MPs.

The programme has been organised by the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training.
