The police arrested a man from the Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi for allegedly threatening to hijack a Mumbai-bound Jet Airways fight after he and his companions entered into an argument with the crew in an "inebriated condition".
The police identified the man as Anil, hailing from Haryana, and said he had also falsely claimed that he had a "bomb in his bag".
The man was boarding the plane along with his five companions on Tuesday night. They began an altercation with the crew over the rescheduling of the flight from 10.30 pm to 12.30 am, according to police.
Amid the argument inside the aircraft, Anil allegedly threatened the crew that he would hijack the plane and that he had a "bomb in his bag", the police said.
The crew immediately caught Anil and his companions and alerted the airport security. Central Industrial Security Force personnel took the six men into custody and later handed them over to the police.
Airport officials alleged that the men were boarding the flight in an in "inebriated condition".
"A case has been registered against Anil for allegedly threatening to hijack the plane and creating nuisance in an inebriated condition. A complaint was lodged by the airport authorities," a senior police officer said.
The five companions of Anil were, however, let off after a thorough enquiry and verification, as their names were not mentioned in the complaint, he said.
The six men were put to a medical test for verification if they had consumed alcohol. "Anil has been arrested. We are investigating the case," he said.
