JK: Senior separatist leaders placed under house arrest

December 10, 2009 17:03 IST

Leaders of the pro-dialogue moderate All Parties Hurriyat Conference including the conglomerate chairman, Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq, were placed under house arrest on Thursday by the authorities in Srinagar to thwart the proposed march and sit-in by them on World Human Rights Day.

Almost all the senior separatist leaders of the moderate group, including Mirwaiz himself, professor Abdul Gani Bhat, Shabir Shah, Naeem Ahmad Khan and Moulvi Abbas Ansari were placed under house arrest early this morning by the authorities.

The administration had posted posse of police outside the homes of the moderate leaders in capital city to restrict their movement.

Another separatist leader, Javed Ahmad Mir, was detained by the police while protesting in Srinagar along with his supporters against alleged human rights violations in Kashmir.

The moderate group had proposed to take out a march led by the senior leaders from their uptown Rajbagh headquarters and later stage a sit-in in Srinagar against the alleged human rights violations in the state.

The pro-independence Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front president Yasin Malik said he will lead a march in the evening with his activists carrying torches.

Meanwhile, the condition of the moderate APHC leader Fazal Haq Qureshi has improved further, but he continues to be in the institute of medical sciences, where he had been admitted last Friday evening, after being shot in the head by militants near his home in Soura locality.
