Following a series of accidents at numerous fireworks units in the recent past that brought it disrepute, municipal authorities at Sivakasi have launched a campaign to change the town spelling to 'Sivahaasi' in the belief that it will prevent further mishaps and bring prosperity.
This move comes just 16 days after councilors unanimously passed a resolution to change the name of the town to 'Sivakaasi' after consulting astrologers and numerologists.
Municipality chairperson Radhika Selvi said the decision to change the name had been pending for some time. Councillors decided to change the spelling and tabled a motion, which was passed, she said.
Selvi said she personally does not believe in numerology, but respect the "sentiments" of people. "So we decided to go for this campaign," she said.
The logic of the new campaign is that a mere change of spelling without proper adherence to phonetics would not suffice.
Hence the importance to the word 'ha' rather than 'kaa' in the new spelling, she said.
