Kerala police assists K'taka in probing arrested Lashkar men

December 07, 2009 14:24 IST
Two police teams from Kerala are assisting Karnataka Police in questioning the two suspected Lashkar-e-Tayiba militants allegedly involved in the serial bomb blasts in Bengaluru last year.

"Two police teams from Kerala arrived in Bengaluru on December 5 to help us conduct the joint probe. The teams are headed by Kerala North Zone Inspector General of Police Tomin J Thachankary and Superintendent of Police, Anti-Terrorist Squad, P Raju," Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar told PTI.

The two suspected LeT operatives, T Nazir and Shafaz, who were arrested along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya and subsequently handed over by the Bangladesh Rifles to the Border Security Force on December 2, were brought to Bengaluru on December 4.

A local court remanded them to 14-day police custody the next day.

Nazir is the prime accused in the serial bomb blasts in July 2008, which claimed one life and left 20 others injured, the police said.

He is also wanted in connection with several cases in Kerala including the 2005 bus burning case at Kalamassery in Kochi, two murders in Kannur district and the twin blasts at Kozhikode in 2006.

Nazir's role in recruiting Muslim youth for 'jihad' along the Indo-Pak border was revealed by some arrested terror suspects in Kashmir after four Malayalee youths died in army encounters while trying to sneak into Pakisatan occupied Kashmir in October last year.
