Porous coast poses threat to security: MoS

Infiltration from across the border and through the ''porus'' coastal belts were posing serious threats in the efforts to safeguard internal security of the nation,Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappalli Ramachandran said on Tuesday.

Internal security of the nation could be safeguarded only if effective steps were taken to reduce the menace of infiltration from across the border,he said. He was speaking after inaugurating the State level distribution of 'National Identity Cards' at Madappally college grounds at Vatakara.

Centre had come out with the idea of issuing valid cards to people to ascertain their identity and to have surveillance of those found to be moving under suspicious circumstances in the coastal belts to contain the menace of infiltration through such areas, Ramachandran said,seeking cooperation of various sections of the society.

Stating that infiltration through the coastal belts, to a great extent, could be checked with the deployment of Coast Guards and setting up of coastal police stations, the Union Minister said nine more coastal police stations would be set up in Kerala in the first phase.

Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan opened a Bio Metric Data Centre on the occasion. State Fisheries Minister S Sarma presided.
