Pak lawyer asks police to register treason case against Musharraf

August 02, 2009 21:35 IST

A lawyer asked Pakistani police to register a case of treason against former President Pervez Musharraf on Sunday, in the wake of the Supreme Court's verdict declaring the 2007 emergency unconstitutional and illegal.

Rawalpindi-based lawyer Chaudhry Khurram Manzoor submitted an application at the Secretariat police station in Islamabad asking for the case to be registered against Musharraf, who is currently in Europe. Following the Supreme Court's order that the emergency imposed by Musharraf on November 3, 2007 was unconstitutional and illegal, police should register a case of violation of the constitution against the former military ruler, Manzoor said.

Manzoor also said Musharraf should be tried for betraying the nation. The police accepted Manzoor's application and sought the opinion of the legal department on whether proceeding with registering a formal case, officials told TV channels. Legal experts have said the apex court's judgement has paved the way for Musharraf to be tried for treason. However, under Pakistani laws, only the government can initiate such action against the former President.       Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said parliament should decide Musharraf's fate.
