I love challenges, says Kasab's new lawyer

Appointed to defend Mohammed Amir Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, Advocate S G Abbas Kazmi on Thursday said he loves challenges and will do his best to abide by the court's decision.

"The judge has decided to appoint me as the lawyer (of Kasab) and I feel that it is in honour of our nation that Kasab should have a lawyer to defend him," he said.

Asked about his strategy to defend Kasab, Abbas told reporters, "I have to go through the chargesheet and documents."

To a query on whether he would seek security like Kasab's earlier lawyer Anjali Waghmare did, Abbas said, "I will ask for police protection."

"I have no idea whether Kasab is a Pakistani. I have to go through the chargesheet," he added.

Abbas, 54, has a law degree from Mumbai's K C College. He informed reporters that he had defended a British national in a child abuse case in Goa.

He has also defended 25 to 30 accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case. Abbas has also represented three accused in the Gulshan Kumar murder case, who were ultimately acquitted by the court.
