Man dies during protests against G-20 summit

One person died after he collapsed during demonstrations against the G-20 summit in London, as security officials vowed to prosecute protestors who broke into a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The man died after he collapsed at the scene of protests near the Bank of England. A protester called the police after they saw the man collapse and stop breathing. Two police medics broke through the cordon and carried the man to a clear area. The ambulance arrived six minutes later and took him to hospital just before 8 pm, where he was pronounced dead. It is believed that the man died of a heart attack.

Violent clashes took place in London between police and anti-capitalism protesters ahead of the talks. In the financial district, the RBS branch was attacked and looted as violence flared during the protests, which resulted in 32 arrests.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is among world leaders who will attend the one-day G-20 summit today. A network of campaign groups has organised a series of protests to highlight causes ranging from job cuts, recession, climate change and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
