March 13, 2011, 20:09: A state of emergency was declared at an earthquake-hit nuclear power plant in Japan, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
"Japanese authorities have informed the IAEA that the first or lowest state of emergency at the Onagawa nuclear power plant has been reported by Tohoku Electric Power Company," the IAEA stated.
The radioactivity levels at the Onagawa nuclear power plant had exceeded safety limits, said authorities.
