Verbal duel between Telugu Desam Party and Congress members over irrigation projects being constructed by Maharashtra government, including the Babli Dam, on Monday forced adjournment of the Lok Sabha twice.

TDP members, led by their leader K Yerrannaidu, were on their feet as soon as the House assembled accusing the Maharashtra government of constructing these projects 'illegally'.

He faced strong protest from the Congress benches with Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suryakanta Patil and her party colleagues Balasaheb Vikhe Patil and Madhusudan Mistry saying the matter could not be discussed in the House as it was a state subject and was subjudice.

Speaker Somnath Chatterjee asked Yerrannaidu whether the matter was subjudice, but the TDP leader continued his tirade against the Maharashtra government.

When some TDP members trooped into the well, the speaker adjourned the House for ten minutes.

When the House re-assembled after the short adjournment, the same scene continued with TDP members again coming to the well, forcing Chatterjee to once again adjourn the House again.

Rajya Sabha:

TDP members, supported by the BJP and the SP, disrupted proceedings in the Rajya Sabha over the same issue.

They said Maharashtra government's action would affect irrigation in 18 lakh acres of agriculture land in Andhra Pradesh.

TDP members demanded suspension of the Question Hour and a discussion on the issue, forcing adjournment of the House twice, first for 20 minutes and then till noon.

As soon as the House met for the day, Ravula Chandra Sekar Reddy (TDP) said he had given a notice to suspend the Question Hour.

Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said he cannot on his own suspend the Question Hour and needs an affirmation from the House but allowed Reddy to speak.

This, however, did not satisfy the Opposition with TDP and BJP members rushing into the well.

As the din continued, he adjourned the House till 1130 hours.

When the House re-assembled, the uproar continued forcing Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan to adjourn it again.
