Rampaging students torch 15 vehicles in Allahabad

Students, protesting the gunning down of their leader Kamlesh Yadav, a contestant for the Allahabad Students Union polls, Friday went on a rampage in Allahabad torching 15 vehicles, including two police jeeps, as police arrested one of the three persons involved in the murder.

The students indulged in heavy stone-pelting besides torching 13 motorcycles in Colonelganj area, Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha told reporters.

Kamlesh Yadav, a candidate for the post of general secretary for the Allahabad Students Union elections, was shot dead Thursday night.

One person had been arrested in connection with the murder while a massive hunt was on to apprehend the other two, he said.

Police conducted raids at several places, including Pratapgarh and Jaunpur in the city, to nab the two who had fled after committing the crime.

Twelve people had been arrested in connection with violence triggered by the murder, Sinha said adding, more arrests were likely.

The body of Kamlesh Yadav, a Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha nominee for the polls, was cremated Thursday.

The district administration had suspended nine policemen, including two sub-inspectors and two head constables, in connection with murder of the student leader.
