A Muslim girl in Meerut refused to marry after her would-be husband demanded dowry from her family.

Minutes before her marriage was to be solemnised on Sunday, Irram, a resident of Sadar Bazar, raised a protest when her fiancé Ziaul Siddiqui, who owns a medicine factory in Lucknow, demanded a car and Rs 3 lakh in cash as dowry, police said on Monday.

Commotion prevailed and the bride's relatives clashed with Siddiqui's friends and relatives, who had come from Lucknow, Senior Sub Inspector of Police Chander Bhan Sigh told PTI.

The couple was reportedly having a love affair for the past four years, Singh said.

After the intervention of local police, the two sides reached a compromise and Siddiqui's father paid Rs one lakh for the expenses incurred by the bride's father and pledged to return some articles already given to the groom's side.

The groom's party returned empty-handed. However, no case has been registered as the two sides reached a mutual consensus, police said.
