A fast track court on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment two people in connection with the rape of a German woman on the outskirts of Jodhpur on May 11, official sources said.

This is one of the fastest convictions for such a crime -- the decision comes within 16 days after the case was presented before the judge.

Additional District Judge (Jodhpur) Praveer Kumar Bhatnagar also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the two accused, special public prosecutor Hastimal Parekh said.

The 47-year-old victim -- an employee with Lufthansa airlines -- left for her country last month after appearing in court and identifying the accused.

On May 11, Shankast Lal, an autorickshaw driver and his accomplice Rakesh raped the German tourist and also stole the woman's mobile phone and cash.
