Omar Abdullah leaves for Tehran

Minister of State for External Affairs Omar Abdullah on Saturday left for Tehran on a crucial visit aimed at reaffirming Indo-Iran bilateral ties especially in the context of the prevailing situation in Afghanistan.

Abdullah is carrying with him a special message from Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Iranian President Syed Mohammad Khatami.

The two-day visit comes in the wake of the United States accusing Iran of keeping its borders with Afghanistan open and allowing Al Qaeda and Taliban leaders to escape from the war-ravaged nation.

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld earlier this week said Iran has not been doing what Pakistan was - "Indeed, quite to the contrary."

Pakistan has also been taking the support of Iran, especially in the forum of the Organisation of Islamic Countries, at various times.
