India, US may hold joint military exercises in Alaska

In the next two months, India and the United States may hold joint exercises in the near-Arctic conditions of Alaska, defence sources said in New Delhi.

The US Army, whose winter warfare school is based in Alaska, is keen to share with the Indian Army its expertise in battling icy conditions, they said.

Though a number of Indian Army mountaineering teams have participated in joint expeditions to the rocky Alaskan peaks, the US side wants to hold battle exercises to draw on India's experience in Siachen glacier.

"The Indian side may despatch a team, which would include officers and men who have done almost 2 to 3 tenures in Siachen," the sources said.

The high-altitude training imparted to the Indian troops has impressed the US forces, now battling in the Afghan mountains, they added.

US Army officers have been attending courses at the Mizoram-based Counter Insurgency Warfare school.

A formal proposal for American army men to participate in the training course in the high-altitude warfare school in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, has been pending, with New Delhi being a bit reluctant because the school located in a sensitive state.
