Pakistan's Minister of Communications, Javed Ashraf Qazi, said on Monday night that the ISI's Kashmir and Afghan wings would continue its operations
Speaking to the state-run Pakistan Television, the former chief of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency said that the two wings fulfil Pakistan's 'intelligence needs'.
Qazi said that the Kashmir department is essential because of the presence of Indian forces in Kashmir. "After all, India has deployed 700,000 troops at Kashmir border and it is the duty of the ISI to keep an eye on the movement of the Indian troops," Qazi said.
The statement marks the first time that any Pakistani Cabinet minister has publicly acknowledged the existence of Kashmir and Afghan wings within the ISI.
India has consistently maintained that the ISI has been waging a covert war in India by aiding and abetting terrorist activities of many Pakistan-based Islamic extremist groups, which have set up operations in India.
