Hurriyat strike paralyses life in Kashmir valley

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

A general strike in Kashmir valley called by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference on Tuesday against the arrest of Syed Ali Shah Geelani crippled normal life.

The strike closed shops, business establishments in Srinagar and other towns. Educational institutions and government offices were also shut.

The Jammu and Kashmir police arrested Geelani along with his son-in-law under Prevention of Terrorism Act, after income tax officials had raided his Hyderpora house on Sunday morning.

The state police chief A K Suri said that during the raid the police recovered Rs 1.1 million and US $10,000 from the house, besides other items.

The Kashmir range police chief, Inspector General of Police K Rajendra said that Geelani has been also arrested under Official Secrets Act for allegedly passing classified documents to Pakistan.

Rajendra claimed that documents recovered from Geelani's residence revealed 'deployment of army and paramilitary forces in Jammu and Kashmir'.
