An all-party meeting on Monday rejected the Election Commission move to implement the Supreme Court directive asking candidates to disclose their antecedents, instead asking the government to bring out a comprehensive legislation to 'curb criminalisation of politics' and 'bring in probity in public life'.

Are the politicians correct, or is this just an attempt to ensure that `tainted' candidates are not debarred?

Your Views:The unity and the momentum of the politicians in parliament to bring a law against the supreme court decision is the right indication that we are being ruled by ass****s. Not only that, this indicates that destructive unity is too much and the criminals are widespread in politics. I think before making any law there should be the consent of the intellectuals in that field, it is advisable to get the consent of the constituency before any politician supports any decision (though it is little difficult in present situation). It is a waste to write scolding these buggers....

Your Views:Lawmakers must set precedents and high standards for citizens to emulate. Lawmakers are bound by India's laws. If they fail to do so, the Supreme Court must step in and impose those high standards. Criminals have no place in Legislature. It is regrettable that all parties have united to oppose the Election Commission.

Your Views:I think it's time to ask Britishers, or for a change Americans, to come and rule India. Our politicians have prove that they care a shit about country. They are only interested in their own well being. And the reason put forward by our ruling class is that the rule will be misused. My dear politicians, just tell me what is not misused in this country. Police force, power, courts, etc,. Then why not have one more law which can be misused?

Your Views:It shows our political leaders true colour and they are united on the only issue of protecting them not the common man. There are many important issues which are not discussed in the legislative offices. We must impose fine on those leaders who are wasting the time by walkouts or causing interruptions. These people got time to think about the SC directive. We must have the information of the leader before electing the leader. The voter must have the right to know, whether he is electing a good or illicit person. By rejecting the directives from SC, the political leaders are proving their illicit nature. Do you keep any dishonest, illegal person as your security person? At last they showed their true colour. Beware of the bad politicians. They are dangerous than what ever you know. Fellow Indians, Try to save your self from these bad politics. God, Save our country from these political creatures. Give us true leaders who can run and save the country for their people, not for themselves.

Your Views:Yes. They are a stupid and corrupt lot. They need to first learn to read and write. and then try and understand the law. Lawmakers don't know how to even write. All they know is how to make money and make profit for themselves. I personally think that all parties have to field anti social elements in the elections for money and power. It's a simple equation. he who has most money has most power and vice versa. so its a vicious cycle. the president, Abdul Kalam, needs to dissolve the Lok Sabha literally with acid. all those who are illiterate should be sent to school and etiquette classes. monthly expense accounts should be published and audited by the CAG. legislation to punish bureaucrats without permission should be promulgated. Are they above the law? Politicians who have cases pending should be debarred. if the party refuses to comply, ban the party. Simple. Contempt of court. That's what it is called. jailed inmates should not be allowed to even near a polling booth let alone win an election. Basically start a new order and rebuild this society which stinks and makes people want to run away. Jai Hind.

Your Views:This is one more example, if one were needed, of the blatant and shameless self-aggrandizement in which our politicians have been indulging for so long. The politicians who otherwise fight street fights in our legislatures on "matters of principles" disrupting their working for days on end have no problems in reaching all party agreements on things like Pays & Perks of legislators. How one wishes the same convergence of ideas occurs when real issues of real national interest come up before them! But before we start screaming murder let's turn inward & do some introspection. Why has this sorry state of affairs has come about? Why do the politicos think they can literally get away with murder once elections are over? Simply because we let them. Whether thru' classical Indian stoicism or plain lethargy or the 'What is it to me?' syndrome; we as people don't care anymore. Because we don't stand up and make them accountable. As the classic saying goes 'A nation ultimately gets the rulers it deserves'.

They are just trying to fool the people as usual, they will eventually set up a committee which will eat up as much time as it can (until this issue fades from public memory, due to some other bigger issues). If the people don't do anything then these corrupt and criminalized politicians will have the last laugh...

These rogues couldn't stand each other (BJP, Congress, Communists) when it comes to economy, national security, education etc.. but when it comes to cleaning the political system, it's amazing how fast their react by arranging a conference and opposing the supreme court judgment. That old man Vajpayee, gangs up with Sonia Gandhi and Communists to nullify a court order while he announce how much he likes to clean the system in public meetings. People of India irrespective of caste, creed, religion, economic status wholeheartedly support the supreme court in its drive to clean our system of rogues, uneducated people, criminals, rapists, law breakers and corrupt people.

It is sad that the always bickering political parties come together only at such times, to squash any effort to bring in progressive measures and help our country. Its a disgrace what the political parties are doing. They are joining arms to protect the current environment in which the criminal and the corrupt thrive. More than ever, we need the citizens of India to come together and stand steadfastly behind the SC and the EC and ensure that our political system is cleaned up, however slowly.

Every criminal wants to become a politician since he knows that it won't be easy for an uneducated person to get a job and the best they can do is to become a minister. Your Views:It is very sad and unfortunate that in the all party meeting the parties did not took supreme court directive in right spirit and postponed the issue for a later date. Can we believe this politicians to keep their words in the future? Isn't it surprising that even after 50 years of India's independence the politicians don't agree immediately that the criminals has to be kept out of the system? Can they be punishable for the contempt of court for this? It is always judiciary which is proactive and then the legislature and executive branch of government reacts. Why could they never bring the law well in advance? The solution is let the Prime minister and the leader of the opposition be answerable to the public for their love for criminals and as responsible citizens go to jail instead of the criminals.

Your Views:Before giving a verdict on the "all-party meeting's" answer to the EC, I wish to make a distinction between the phrases "all-party", and "all-party power wielders". It is impossible that no party has people with zero criminal records and clean asset/ income records. Even if any political party doesn't have sufficient number of "clean" people, it can find ways to recruit new people from the masses, for after all, the vast majority of the population does not have a criminal record, and can be trusted to have clean income/asset records. The simple fact is, almost all the people who are already in power simply want to cling to it forever. If anything, the political parties are missing one wonderful chance to cleanse themselves.

This is the most necessary step to take India to next level of development. Second step should be maximum age limit for post of PM, CM and president of India. 70 years should be the upper limit, we need young (if I can call 70 to be young) blood at the top. Do you think politicians should have any moral right to take decision on issues like above? In absence of high morals and ethics among our politicians, a separate system, like judiciary, needs power to balance Indian democracy. However, Indian people have already lost there faith in judiciary system, in that case permanent voting booths should be established across the country and court should order poll and allow people to make decisions on issues like this. Usual argument on polls is, it is expensive. Can somebody tell me cost incurred per year for setting up commissions on various issues? I bet an infrastructure for polling will be long term and effective.

Your Views:Its quite unfortunate to have the Election Commission's move toppled. Nobody in their senses will succumb to these politicians view because, as an Indian, I would like to elect a clean representative to rule India but unfortunately we have no other choice rather than to elect one from the list. That is the curse of Indian democratic system. (This situation is much severe in states like Bihar.) I personally feel that the SC's directive has to be implemented at any cost. Now we have at least one destiny to knock at by way of our judiciary, but once that's allowed to be toppled, people will also lose their faith in our judiciary system which could bring in more serious consequences. Especially when we undergo such an unstable situation. Should we allow these illiterate politicians to overpower or judicial system? Its the right of every Indian to have 'clean' candidates to choose from and hence its the duty of the commission to screen out tainted politicians and criminals from the system. I personally believe that the SC directive has to be implemented and hope most of the readers will also subscribe to this view.

They give themselves high salaries and perks without even bothering to justify these. When they travel they want the public sector undertaking to foot their bills. They want to live in luxury while on government duty when in ordinary life they might never be able to afford these. There are numerous instances of elected members trying to take advantage of their position. Enough is enough. It is time the people of this country stand up and get counted. We should not any longer allow these politicians to further ruin the country. The EC's recommendations, based on the Supreme Courts verdict, is something that is essential if democracy in its true sense is to continue. Criminals should be kept out. Also only those who have the desire to serve the people should be allowed to enter the hallowed institutions of parliament and assemblies. Political parties with an eye on power will never, never allow any law against the interests of existing politicians to be passed. Tainted candidates must be barred.

Your Views:NO, I do not agree when you say that lawmakers are above the law in the present context. It is a fact that the legislature has a right to make laws and this legislature consists of the elected representatives. In the present case, one has to look into the pros and cons of the amendments which are to be brought into the Peoples Representation Act. I am sure that a politician belonging any political party starting from a grass root level worker to the Minister will have faced some kind of the legal battle, whether the same being a genuine case or frivolous one. One should remember that the recourse to law is taken by those people especially in political arena to score political vendetta and has nothing to do with brining the culprits to book. Such being the case, the amendements sought suggested by the Election Commissions will be used more as a political weapon by the unscrupulous people to see that a deserving person is also not able to contest the election by filing a false complaint against him on the eve of election. The constitution of India is supreme and giving powers to the returning officers to accept or reject the nomination papers is not sustainable in large democracy.

It is, however, sadly true that the junta, by and large, has lost faith in the integrity, probity and honesty of the leaders who adorn the political spectrum of our country today. The alternative proposed in lieu of the Supreme Court directive is nothing but a desperate attempt to enable tainted and corrupted politicos to cling to their 'gaddis' and the consequent power and affluence that flows from chairs in high office.

Your Views:No person is above the law, but the thing is I want to know (as a voter) who the candidates are, his education, or his ability, for me to choose the representative. Why the hell they are not letting us to know the details of the candidate? It clearly shows that they still want the illiterate to play the role, but still the time is not far off and much changes have taken place during last 50 years so it will be like that one day nobody will want to become MPs or MLAs.

Your Views:when it comes to their own survival all the politicians join together irrespective of their political affiliation. this is sheer opportunism but they will make it appear as if they are fighting for a cause just to fool the people. only god can save the country from the corrupt politicians. Your Views:I think this is another attempt by political parties to field their tainted candidates. If they are so serious about avoiding criminalisation of politics then what is the problem in accepting the election commission's guidelines regarding this. I seriously think that politician or parliament must be striped of power of making legislation that directly or indirectly affects their lives. What kind of logic is this, that the people are making the laws for their own lives. It is just ridiculous. People in parliament making the rule for us to follow which they have broken all their lives and will do so in future as well.

Your Views:Wait and Watch. More often than not, the politicians try to save their skin. So this too may be seen as an attempt to ensure that 'tainted' candidates are not debarred. But, considering the fact that, even the statesmen like Vajapayeeji, Advaniji and others too feel the same and agree with the opinion expressed at the all-party meeting, this needs to be given time before we jump to conclusion. It is better to wait and watch. The misuse of the SC directive can not be ruled out.

Your Views:What's happening in our nation is incorrect. There is absolutely no deterrent as far as the legal system is concerned. You will find corruption at every level and people seem to have forgotten to respect law. Partially the law makers and politicians are to be blamed. We need to device a mechanism that precludes these perpetrators/violators and punish them. Firstly the directive of the Supreme Court has to be adhered with, otherwise they need not contest any election. Candidates who have objection in submitting their antecedents should not be permitted to contest any election and if they are holding any positions should be asked to withdrawn. They should be debarred from contesting any further elections. There need to be a deterrent, otherwise things will never work in this nation.

Your Views:All party meeting had confirmed that all politicians are the same. They are all a waste and colossal loss to the nation. No one is above law. They should follow the guidelines given by Supreme Court. Why did they take more than 50 years to enact some Electoral reforms? Such politicians are a waste for the national resources.

Your Views:If Law are not very old not suiting present condition, it is requirement to amend law by law maker, but law in constitution is highly right since it was made by intellectuals. So in this situation, law maker is not above the law.
