Two NC leaders escape unhurt in militant attack

Two National Conference leaders, including a former legislator, escaped unhurt when militants attacked their houses in Baramulla district in Kashmir late on Thursday night, official sources said.

Heavily armed militants first fired two rifle grenades at the houses of NC leader and former member of legislative assembly Ghulam Mohiuddin and his close associate Ghulam Rasool Khan in village Lalad and then opened indiscriminate fire, the sources said.

The houses suffered damage, but none was hurt in the attack.

Meanwhile, Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley wore a deserted look on Friday following a bandh call given by pro-Pakistan Al-Umer Mujahideen.

Shops and business establishments, government-run ration depots, banks and post offices remained closed.

Attendance in government, semi-government offices and private institutions was thin.

Tight security arrangements have been made in Srinagar and other major towns in Kashmir valley to foil any attempt by terrorists to disrupt Republic Day celebrations, Deputy Inspector General (BSF) R S Bhullar said.

"We have no specific information about any plan by militants to target Republic Day celebrations, but we are leaving nothing to chance," Bhullar added.

Army personnel have been carrying out surprise searches around the Bakshi stadium, where the main R-Day function will take place.

All roads leading to the stadium have been sealed.

"Security personnel have been advised not to believe anyone. Virtually anyone can be viewed as a potential threat,'' said an army officer.
