Two top militants of Hizbul Mujahideen were gunned down in Chake Seeri, near the north Kashmir town of Pattan in Baramulla, while one was shot dead at Babigam in Pulwama district on Wednesday.
Police said troops sealed Chake Seeri on Wednesday morning to flush out the two militants hiding in the village. The troops came under heavy fire from the militants as the search operations began.
The security forces retaliated and a gunfight took place, which ended in the afternoon.
Army later recovered bodies of the two militants identified as Mohammad Maqbool Rather alias Jehangir and 'battalion commander' of the outfit Fayaz Ahmed. Troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one pistol and ammunition from the site of the gun battle.
The bodies were handed over to the local police.
As the news about the killing of the two militants spread in Pattan, hundreds of villagers came out on the streets and shopkeepers pulled down their shutters. The locals later attacked the police station demanding the bodies.
Another top Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Mohammad Yousuf alias Zarar was killed in an ambush by Special Operations Group of local police at Babigam in Pulwama district of south Kashmir.
