One person was killed and 16, including two paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force soldiers, were wounded in a grenade explosion in the south Kashmir town of Kulgam on Tuesday evening.
The police said militants hurled a grenade on a CRPF party causing injuries to two soldiers and 14 civilian bystanders.
One shopkeeper identified as Gauher Ahmad, who was critically wounded, succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to hospital.
The police and security forces later cordoned off the market place and mounted searches.
Security in south Kashmir has been tightened on the eve of the Independence Day.
The police said army and paramilitary troops are on high alert in the south Kashmir districts of Anantnag and Pulwama.
