US warplanes to refuel in Bombay

Sheela Bhatt in New Delhi

According to an official in the prime minister's office, India was ready to facilitate American military actions in the subcontinent against the terrorists who were responsible for Tuesday's attacks in New York and Pentagon.

President Bush's statement that Osama bin Laden "cannot hide from the United States" is a clear indication of the geographical field of American retaliation, the official said.

The Taleban-controlled Afghanistan is where Laden operates from.

According to the source, the Vajpayee government had referred to the papers of the Chandrasekhar regime of 1991, the year that the Gulf War took place.

"We will offer the same facilities under the same conditions, as we did during the Gulf War," he said, adding that the American warplanes would be offered refuelling facilities in Bombay.

The PMO and home ministry is in touch with the newly-appointed American Ambassador to India Robert D Blackwill.
