Nine militants killed in Kashmir

Binoo Joshi in Jammu

Indian Army troops gunned down nine militants in two separate encounters in Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday, continuing their offensive in the border district that has seen a dramatic spurt in insurgency.

In the first encounter at Huranthal near Surankote, five militants including a divisional commander of the Harkat-ul-Mujahadeen were killed, a spokesman of the army said.

Four militants were killed in another encounter in the district, at Sarot, but their identity could not be ascertained immediately.

The spokesman said Tuesday's killings were an outcome of increased cooperation from the local people.

On Monday, the army killed seven militants in Poonch -- five in Mandi and two in Mendhar.
