A fidayeen militant stormed a heavily guarded police station in Chadoora in central Budgam district in the wee hours of Friday morning.
Senior police officers told rediff.com that the militant hurled grenades and fired from an automatic rifle on the CRPF soldier standing guard, gaining entry into the police station.
They said one CRPF guard received serious injuries, adding paramilitary reinforcements were rushed to the spot who surrounded the building.
The militant holed up inside the police station fired on the troops outside, and in the ensuing melee policemen inside the building were able to come out, the sources added.
The sources said the troops used mortar fire to blast one portion of the building where the militant was holed up.
After the use of mortar fire, the firing from inside the police station stopped, and the troops have started mop up operations, the sources added.
