Three army soldiers and an equal number of militants were killed in a fierce gun battle at village Hurpora Shopian in southern Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.
Police said army troops mounted a massive combing operation in Hurpora late on Wednesday and came under heavy fire.
The gun battle lasted the entire Wednesday night and police said the troops killed three militants while losing three of their own in the encounter.
Meanwhile, militants gunned down Gul Mir, brother of top slain counter insurgent Azad Nabi, at village Sholipoora in Anantnag district.
Militants had earlier killed Azad, who was the chief commander of the pro-India militant outfit Muslim Mujahideen, near Achabal in July this year.
Meanwhile, Pakistani troops opened heavy fire on Indian posts in Akhnoor sector on Wednesday night, to which the Indian army retaliated.
However, no one was injured in the firing, police sources said.
