Five people, including four ultras, were killed and two securitymen injured in Jammu and Kashmir, where militants attacked the home of a state minister even as a major tragedy was averted with timely detection of two powerful Improvised Explosive Devices on the Srinagar-Chrar-e-Sharief road since Monday night.
Militants attacked a police station, a security convoy, a security camp and guards posted at a bridge, while four ultras were arrested and another laid down arms during the period, an official spokesman said in Srinagar Tuesday.
He said militants lobbed grenades and opened fire on the heavily-guarded residential house of Minister of State for Food and Supplies B A Nengroo at village Prechu in Pulwama district Monday night. His security guards fired back. There were no casualties. The minister was not present in the house at the time of the attack.
Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Ujjan in Rajouri district Tuesday, the spokesman said. In another encounter at Bakh Karkan Bali in Poonch District two ultras and a civilian were killed Monday night.
A major tragedy was averted with timely detection of two IEDs, weighing five kgs each and planted in two gas cylinders, under Wathoora bridge on Srinagar-Char-e-Sharief road in Badgam district early Tuesday, he said. The IEDs, detected by the road opening parties of the BSF, were neutralised, the spokesman said.
He said two security personnel were injured in a shootout with militants at Zab-Magam in Kupwara district Monday night.
