Alleged killer of Gulshan Kumar
booked in fresh case

He was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer who remanded him to judicial custody after police informed that investigations were incomplete.

On February 12, he was also booked in a fresh case of extortion and remanded to police custody.

According to the police, the accused had allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs 500,000 from a contractor, Satish Kumar Upadhaya, in 1996.

In the Gulshan Kumar case, he was remanded to judicial custody till March 27.

Merchant, a sharp shooter of Chhota Shakeel gang, has disclosed names and hideouts of his associates. Four pagers and a cell phone, used in the crime, were yet to be traced.

The court was told that an identification parade had been conducted in Thane jail on February 2 and seven witnesses had identified Abdul Rauf as the one who killed Gulshan Kumar on August 12, 1997, outside a temple in Bombay.

The accused had also disclosed his plan to kill film personalities with the help of his friends in Madras, Calcutta and Bombay at the behest of Chhota Shakeel.

Rauf was arrested from a public call office in Calcutta on January 8. The prosecution has informed a trial court that it would file a chargesheet against Rauf on March 21.
