Pak's military commanders discuss Musharraf's India visit

K J M Varma in Islamabad

Pakistan's military commanders on Friday discussed India's invitation to military ruler General Pervez Musharraf for talks and the statements by Islamic militant groups opposing his proposed visit to New Delhi.

An official statement, issued on the first day of the two-day conference of the commanders at the Army headquarters in Rawalpindi, made a one-line reference to India's invitation stating that discussion took place on India's "positive response to Pakistan's desire for a dialogue on the issue of Kashmir."

Official sources said the meeting of the corps commanders, the highest policy-making forum of the military government, reviewed in detail the developments that followed Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's invitation to Musharraf.

The sources said the meeting, attended by all 12 corps commanders and principle staff officers of the Pakistan Army, took note of the militant groups' opposition to Musharraf's proposed India visit.

Meanwhile, officials said Musharraf presided over a meeting of foreign ministry officials on Thursday to take stock of the preparations being made for his Delhi visit.

The meeting discussed the dates and duration of Musharraf's visit and the broad agenda that could form part of his meeting with Vajpayee and other top Indian leaders.
