Pakistan yet to send formal invitation
to Vajpayee: Sattar

Pakistan is yet to send the formal invitation to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to visit Islamabad as it is awaiting the signature of President Pervez Musharraf, Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar said on Monday.

The draft of the invitation letter is ready and awaiting the approval and signature of Musharraf, he told a group of Indian correspondents who had come to cover the president's recent press conference.

He said the invitation has not been sent to Vajpayee as reported in a section of the Pakistani media but would be despatched shortly after the military ruler signed it.

Sattar said his own letter inviting External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh would be despatched in the course of the week.

Both Vajpayee and Singh had accepted oral invitations during the Agra summit to visit Pakistan.

Official indications in Islamabad are that Singh would visit Islamabad in September before the Vajpayee-Musharraf meeting during the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York in the same month.

Pakistan officials are also giving the impression that Vajpayee could visit Islamabad as early as by the end of the year.
