Diarrhoea cases rise rapidly
in flood-hit Orissa

Flood-affected coastal Orissa is facing a fresh threat -- rapidly rising cases of diarrhoea.

Though officially only six people have died and 458 cases of diarrhoea detected so far, the state government has asked senior health officials to take urgent measures to check its spread.

"Diarrhoea is spreading in the flood-hit districts, it may assume epidemic proportions soon," a senior official attached to the central health control room in capital Bhubaneswar said on Friday.

Over 400 cases of diarrhoea were reported on Thursday alone.

Three deaths each have been reported from Ganjam and Dhenkanal districts. But unofficial reports put the toll at 20.

Senior officials believe that the spread of the disease will be faster once flood waters recede.

Kendrapara is the worst hit with over 500 cases of diarrhoea. Balasore and Jajpur follow closely with 384 and 298 cases respectively.
