APHC meeting Thursday to decide strategy

The All-Party Hurriyat Conference executive will meet in Srinagar on Thursday to decide its future strategy in the light of reports that the Union government would allow only a select few of its leaders to travel to Pakistan.

The meeting will discuss whether to give the Centre another chance to issue passports to all seven executive members shortlisted to undertake the journey or call off the visit.

Hurriyat wants to hold discussions in Pakistan to find ways and means to take ahead the peace process in Jammu and Kashmir set rolling by the Union government with its Ramzan ceasefire.

Barring former chairman Moulvi Omar Farooq, no other Hurriyat leader has a passport.

Abdul Gani Lone was recently issued country-specific passport to visit Pakistan to attend his son's wedding. It is valid only for three months.

Moulvi Abbas Ansari's passport was impounded by the government sometime back. However, he and Moulvi Omar were allowed by the Centre to visit Qatar to participate in the Organisation of Islamic Conference summit in November last year.

Senior Hurriyat leaders, including Chairman Abdul Ghani Butt, Abdul Ghani Lone and Mohammad Yaseen Malik, who were in Delhi for the past few days, have accused the Centre of scuttling a "well meaning" move.

Expressing disappointment at the government's "dilly-dallying" tactics, the leaders said the Union government does not seem to be interested in taking the peace process to its logical conclusion.
