Former PoK president for non-military zone along LoC

Former president of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir Sardar Mohammad Qayyum Khan has said New Delhi should declare three to four miles of land along the Line of Control as a non-military zone to allow leaders on both sides of the Indo-Pak border to confabulate on the Kashmir issue.

These leaders should then hold talks with both India and Pakistan to solve the Kashmir conundrum, he suggested.

Talking to newspersons in Rawalpindi, he cautioned against ''showing haste in finding a permanent solution to the Kashmir issue''. The need of the hour was to lay greater stress on the mechanism and modalities of finding a solution to the Kashmir problem, he added.

''If we make a slight mistake at this juncture, we will lose everything we have gained so far and thus will have no option but to start again from scratch,'' he said.

He stressed the need for creating a conducive atmosphere for the success of ongoing endeavours on settling the Kashmir issue.

Khan, president of the Muslim Conference, said he made a proposal regarding the non-military zone during a recent meeting with American and British diplomats. He, however, did not say what their reactions to his proposal were.
