13 militants among 15 killed in J&K

Militants fired 20 mortar bombs aimed at civilian areas near army camps in Rajouri town in Jammu and Kashmir. However, they missed the target and exploded in open areas injuring an old woman, a defence spokesman said on Monday night.

The mortar bombs were fired in two salvos on Sunday near the Army Engineering Unit at 1930 hours (IST) and Darhali bridge around 2100 hours. Five of them exploded in Mubarakpur seriously injuring an old woman while the others landed in open areas without causing any loss of life or damage to property.

Army personnel retaliated by firing on the militants who escaped under the cover of darkness, the spokesman said.

Later, during a search, army personnel seized 31 high explosive bombs of 82-mm mortar from Bani village in the area. The mortar supposedly used was also recovered, he said.

Unofficial reports, however, said the rockets caused cracks in some houses and some windowpanes were smashed.

Meanwhile, fifteen people, including 13 militants, were killed and two others wounded in militancy related violence in the state since Sunday.

An official spokesman said on Monday that panic gripped exhibition crossing in the heart of Srinagar in the afternoon when a powerful bomb exploded in the premises of the Engineering complex.

He said the blast caused no harm. However, it was not immediately known who was the target of the militants as security forces are also camping nearby.

A defence ministry spokesman said six militants belonging to two different militant outfits were killed in separate encounters at Doraswan-Lolab in the frontier district of Kupwara.

Five militants were killed and another was wounded in separate encounters at Dara-Sangla in Poonch and Chapper Darra in Rajouri areas of Jammu region on Monday, a police spokesman said.

He said security forces shot dead two more militants in different encounters at Narsar-Achabal and Nagripora in Anantnag district of south Kashmir early on Monday.

A sub-inspector of the Special Operations Group of the J&K police, Raja Mohammad Saleem was killed when a group of militants ambushed a search party at Kandi in frontier district of Kupwara on Monday, official sources said.

Militants also killed a special police officer, Latif Ahmad Khan, at Azadgunj in Baramulla district, the spokesman said.
