Nine killed, infiltration bid foiled in J&K

Nine people, including eight militants, were killed and three ultras arrested in Jammu and Kashmir since Thurday, even as the army foiled an infiltration bid by a group of Pakistan-trained militants.

A defence spokesman said in Srinagar that army troops, noticing a group trying to sneak into the Indian side from across the border in Tengdhar sector of Kupwara district early on Friday, challenged them. But the intruders opened fire and in the ensuing encounter three militants were killed.

The whole area has been cordoned off and a search is on to nab other members of the group, he said.

Four Lashker-e-Tayiba militants were killed in encounters with security forces at Dudpathri Behak in Badgam district of central Kashmir and Kamad in Anantnag district of south Kashmir Thursday night, the spokesman said.

A surrendered militant, Ajaz Ahmad was killed by ultras inside his house at Basti in Doda district, he said.

Militants shot dead one Ghulam Nabi Tantray at Bidder in Anantnag district.

Three militants were arrested during search operations in Baramulla, Kupwara and Poonch districts. Two AK assault rifles, two pistols, 30 grenades, 12 rockets, 12 rocket boosters and an improvised explosive device were recovered during the operation, the spokesman said.

A civilian sustained splinter injuries when militants exploded a grenade inside a police vehicle at Sabzi Mandi in central Srinagar early on Friday, he said, adding that a jawan was injured when militants ambushed a security patrol at Jamnagri in Pulwama district on Thursday evening.
