BSF deputy commandant
among 16 killed in J&K

A deputy commandant of the Border Security Force and a self-styled commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen were among the 16 people killed in Jammu and Kashmir in the past 24 hours.

BSF Deputy Commandant B S Rathod and two militants were killed and two other BSF personnel injured an a fierce clash at Sumbal Monday night.

Elsewhere in the state, ten militants, including a self-styled divisional commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, Nazir Cobra, were among the 13 people killed.

A BSF spokesperson said a search party led by Rathod raided Sumbal in north Kashmir. They were fired upon by the militants. The BSF personnel retaliated and in the ensuing clash, Rathod lost his life.

Two militants also died in the exchange of fire.

Rathod's body was flown to New Delhi after a wreath-laying ceremony at Panthachowk on Tuesday.

Nazir Cobra, a self-styled commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed in an encounter with the Special Operation Group of the Jammu and Kashmir police at Hanjivera Pattan late Monday night.

One AK rifle, two magazines, one wireless set and two grenades were recovered from him.

One person was killed and another injured in a landmine blast at Keran on Monday night, while forces shot dead a foreign militant at Kupwara earlier the same day.

An official spokesperson said two militants were killed in an encounter at Mangnipora Bandipora on Monday evening. One SPO and a woman were injured in the shootout.

Security forces gunned down a foreign militant in an encounter in Kupwara Monday evening, and seized one AK rifle, one pistol, four magazines and Rs 6,200, the spokesperson added.

In another encounter at Bachianwali Monday evening, two militants and a special police officer lost their lives.

Meanwhile, two people abducted by militants from Ashmuqam were released after two days in captivity on Monday.

A report from Jammu said a civilian was seriously injured and four cattleheads perished in Pakistani shelling in Nowshera sector.

Sources said two militants each were killed at Deral Dhok and Bachar-Lanwal during search operations Monday evening. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered.

Unidentified militants detonated a powerful improvised explosive device at Snahi Bhalla on the Doda-Bhaderwah road Monday evening, injuring a soldier.

Acting on information regarding suspicious movement in dhoks at Dhandi Dhara and Pattan, a seek-and-destroy operation was launched by the Rashtriya Rifles troops Monday evening, but the militants managed to give them the slip.

A search revealed that the dhoks were being used as hideouts by the militants, sources said. A large cache of arms, ammunition and explosives, including ten kg of RDX, an AK-56 rifle, rifle grenades, five RPG rockets and six PPG boosters were recovered.

Also, in an operation at Kalachara Dadal near the Line of Control in Rajouri district, security forces recovered a cache of arms and ammunition.
