Bombay's Demolition Man
Khairnar retires: PTI

Bombay's Demolition Man G R Khairnar, an officer on special duty in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation retired on Thursday as the civic administration did not extend his service.

''After consulting all concerned I have decided not to give another extension to Khairnar,'' Municipal Commissioner V Ranganathan told reporters.

He had retired as deputy commissioner on June 1 this year but was retained as OSD till November 30.

The popular feeling was that Khairnar be given another extension for his anti-encroachment drives, but Mayor Hareshwar Patil of the Shiv Sena had opposed the idea.

Khairnar, after Ranganathan's announcement, said, ''I have nothing to say. The mayor and commissioner have taken a decision in their capacity.''

But he added that he was ready to work for another term. ''I will now engage myself in various social causes,'' Khairnar, who has earlier worked for rescuing minor girls from city's brothels, said.
