ITBP deputy commandant among
7 killed in J&K encounter

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

In a fierce gun battle at village Bungund Dooru in Anantnag district, seven persons, including a deputy commandant of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police were killed early on Saturday morning.

Police said a party of the ITBP, on receiving specific information, raided a house at village Bungund where two militants were hiding. As security forces attempted to enter the house, the militants hurled grenades and opened heavy fire from automatic weapons.

Police sources said a deputy commandant of the ITBP, identified as S P S Gulleria, and another official died on the spot in the firing.

The ITBP encircled the house and waited until reinforcements from the Rashtriya Rifles joined them. The troops then returned the fire. Sources said the encounter continued for several hours.

Another ITBP personnel died in the fierce encounter. Two civilians identified as Ghulam Hassan Chopan and Ghulam Ahmed Chopan were also killed in the crossfire.

RR jawans finally resorted to mortars to blast the house.

Police said bodies of two militants were recovered on Saturday morning from the debris. A search of the area was still on.

Meanwhile, militants forced their entry in to a house in Hamam Markote village in Baramulla district and opened indiscriminate fire on the inmates killing two persons on the spot and wounding another.

They then forced their entry into an adjoining house and abducted the village headman identified as Abdul Quyoom.

Militants have been targeting pro-India political leaders and village headmen ever since poll dates for panchayat elections, being held in the state after over 20 years, were announced.
